"You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island opportunities and look toward another land; there is no other land, there is no other life but this." -Henry David Thoreau
True story: Bono was playing a U2 concert in Glasgow recently, when he asked the audience for total quiet. Then in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds. Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies." A Glaswegian voice rang out from near the front of the crowd, piercing the silence........ "Well, fuckin' stop doing it then!"

[28 Nov 2006|12:48pm] |
2 weeks away to another homecoming. I hate flying for the life of me, but at least I'll be spoiled away in business class.
i've been thinking about trying out for the production of the Vagina Monologues in SF - with an all Filipina cast. but alas, rehearsals are every sunday in January and February and with the way my work goes, I just won't have the time. ah well. I suppose I'll just watch it again this year.
Ken and I are writing our own personal vows for the wedding, and I have NO idea what to say! I don't want it to sound mushy and rehearsed. And then, an idea popped into my head - how about I just use a song for my vows. maybe no one will notice if it's an obscure song? and then - a wilder idea, how bout I just compile Ken's and my favourite songs, and come up with vows made up with lines from the songs. BRILLIANCE!!!
or I could just use these vows: Pastor: Will you answer me right now These questions, as your wedding vow?
Groom: Yes, I will answer right now Your questions as my wedding vow.
Pastor: Will you take her as your wife? Will you love her all your life?
Groom: Yes, I take her as my wife, Yes, I'll love her all my life.
Pastor: Will you have, and also hold Just as you have at this time told?
Groom: Yes, I will have, and I will hold, Just as I have at this time told, Yes, I will love her all my life As I now take her as my wife.
Pastor: Will you love through good and bad? Whether you're happy or sad?
Groom: Yes, I'll love through good and bad, Whether we're happy or sad, Yes, I will have and I will hold Just as I have already told, Yes, I will love her all my life, Yes, I will take her as my wife!
Pastor: Will you love her if you're rich? Or if you're poor, and in a ditch?
Groom: Yes, I'll love her if we're rich, And I will love her in a ditch, I'll love her through good times and bad, Whether we are happy or sad, Yes, I will have, and I will hold (I could have sworn this has been told!) I promise to love all my life This woman, as my lawful wife!
Pastor: Will you love her when you're fit, And also when you're feeling sick?
Groom: Yes, I'll love her when we're fit, And when we're hurt, and when we're sick, And I will love her when we're rich And I will love her in a ditch And I will love through good and bad, And I will love when glad or sad, And I will have, and I will hold Ten years from now a thousandfold, Yes, I will love for my whole life This lovely woman as my wife!
Pastor: Will you love with all your heart? Will you love till death you part?
Groom: Yes, I'll love with all my heart From now until death do us part, And I will love her when we're rich, And when we're broke and in a ditch, And when we're fit, and when we're sick, (Oh, CAN'T we get this finished quick?) And I will love through good and bad, And I will love when glad or sad, And I will have, and I will hold, And if I might now be so bold, I'll love her my entire life, Yes, I WILL take her as my wife!
Pastor: Then if you'll take her as your wife, And if you'll love her all your life, And if you'll have, and if you'll hold, From now until the stars grow cold, And if you'll love through good and bad, And whether you're happy or sad, And love in sickness, and in health, And when you're poor, and when in wealth, And if you'll love with all your heart, From now until death do you part, Yes, if you'll love her through and through, Please answer with these words:
Pastor and Groom: I DO!
Pastor: You're married now! So kiss the bride, But please, do keep it dignified.
I can't believe I actually looked up "wedding vows" in google to see if I could get some ideas. I mean shit, this is the first time i'll be doing this. There's gotta be a dummies guide to it. let's play a game at the ceremony - whoever can guess all the songs I'm pulling from in my vows gets the bouquet!

working 4 straight weekends in a row with not much time taken off in between is not fun. I'm tired to talking about it. I live bone marrow. In my office, at drives, in my e-mail, bone marrow. bulalo bulalo bulalo.
I need a vacation from helping to save lives. Isn't that a sad thing to say? I know you can relate with me on this one though squicky. It's tough. Tough to have to meet family of patients and see the grief and stress inflicted on them. Tough to have to get close enough to a family and to a patient only to have them pass away. Tough to always have to deal with funerals and desperation. tough to have to actually have to convince people, practically beg them to help save a life. tough to have to deal with people who say that they don't want to help because they're afraid of needles. To me, that's a wimpy answer.
I suppose if I were to look at the bright side of things, there are also those who do genuinely want to help - although they certainly are the minority. There is hope in patient's families that their loved one will surive. And some have.
I don't know what the point of this post is. I suppose it's mostly to convince myself that what I'm doing is worth doing. It's also an attempt to release all the frustration I've been having - an attempt to light that passion in me again because I'm totally burnt out.
I've realized that the working world has made me more impatient, judgemental, tired and just cranky - like a lotta americans out there. We're all busting our balls to give gas to the American capitalist engine which churns out more money and power for "the American Dream" that is to bring democracy and christianity to "people in need". Soon enough, this country is going to blow up. You can feel it in the air - overworked, psychologically distressed americans - you can practically see the gray smoke seeping out of their brains.
hahaha. shit I'm going mad. I can't believe I just said that Americans have smoke seeping out their brains.
meanwhile, the wedding is also killing me not-softly. I need a vacation from my life.

| about the perfection of a city that I call home |
[15 Jun 2006|11:26pm] |
I love Foster City! It's still a little piece of suburbia and I would have to say the most perfect city out there. No slums, no gangs, no nothing.
Over the Edge (film) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Over the Edge is a movie completed in 1979 and released on HBO two years later because its controversial content led to a decision to forego a theatrical release. It stars Matt Dillon in his feature film debut.
Because of its depiction of teenage rebellion, marijuana and alcohol use by high school students, a painstakingly accurate depiction of suburban life in the late 1970s, and a rock & roll soundtrack featuring such bands as The Ramones and Cheap Trick, Over the Edge has achieved cult film status, and in turn inspired the music video for the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana.
Over the Edge was inspired by actual events that took place in Foster City, California in the early 1970s.
Synopsis
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
The film follows a group of teenagers living in a fictional planned community called New Granada, which is isolated beyond other existing suburbs, in the nearly-treeless plains east of Denver, Colorado. Their needs were not considered by those who designed the community, and so there is nothing for them to do but go to school and hang out at the local recreation center, which closes at six o‘clock. The kids turn to substance abuse and petty crime as a way to kill their boredom, but their outcry falls on deaf ears, as the adults are too concerned with pursuing wealth and stomping out the seemingly-senseless rowdy behavior to actually understand the reasons why the adolescents are acting up. After one of the kids is shot and killed by a police officer, the youths violently rebel against their parents and the authorities, an uprising that results in fiery mayhem in and around the junior high school.

We're doing it! We're eloping this Saturday!!
Come Saturday, I will officially be a Mrs.
People keep asking me how I feel - am I excited? am I nervous? am I ready? Honestly? I'm weirded out. Because in my mind, the big bad title of "married" belongs to fifty-somethings who have kids. In other words, the title of "married" belongs to people like my parents. It's strange to be the first and youngest person among my siblings to get married. It's strange to be the second out of all my cousins to get married. It just doesn't seem "right".
Okay, down to the mushy stuff. I really can't imagine being with anyone else but Ken. He just makes me a better person. =) He supports me when I want to do things - like go out on girls' nights, and stay at home when he wants to go somewhere, he supports me when I want to watch a play and he doesn't, he supports me when I want to just go somewhere, and do something. I feel so free and at the same time, at home, with him. He's everything I think my lifelong partner should be.
Don't call me married though. At least not until December to avoid my family's feelings being hurt. It's bad enough as it is that we're eloping, so we just want to keep it on low-profile, and celebrate December 16 as our "real" wedding date, when we get to celebrate with everyone we love.
We're marrying on Makena Cove Beach. By a reverend named Vance. (I like his last name better, it sounds more exotic - Alapaki). Probably in the rain. With our swim suits and slippers on.
I think, when I eventually have a daughter, I want to name her Makena.

i've started reading it! i hate reading a book too fast, it just disappoints me in the end when it's over, so i try to savor it best as i can trying to make sure i understand every single word that's being said. i think i read book 5 too fast, because now i need to read it again. i can't exactly remember what happened in the end and all the details in between are fuzzy too. All I remember are a few OWLS, sirius dying, the fact that some prophecy existed. and that's about it.
GAWDDAMMIT J.K. ROWLING... write FASTER! *snarl* I need more harry potter.

| Origami Paper Crane Folding Party and Art contest |
[05 Jul 2005|09:41am] |
Hello Everyone!
the Asian American Donor Program will be hosting an Origami Paper Crane Folding Party on Wednesday night (5:30 pm) July 20, 2005
at the Blood Centers of the Pacific on 270 Masonic Ave (at Turk st.), SF.
We'll be teaching people to fold origami paper cranes with all kinds of fun, colored paper, and then we'll be making keychains out of the cranes we fold. After you take one home for yourself, the keychains we make will be given to donors who sign up to be potential Marrow/Blood Stem Cell donors to help people with Leukemia, Lymphoma and other life threatening blood diseases. These keychains will serve as a reminder of the hope that they are giving to so many out there in need.
Feel free to visit the website of the Asian American Donor Program at www.aadp.org to find out more details. We have also just launched an origami crane art contest that promises a cash prize to the winner. More details at the website as well.
Hope to see a few you lj'ers out there!

I don't know when the last time was that I had a free weekend. Ever since April started, I haven't really felt the joy of Fridays anymore. On the upside, I've got a lot of comp-time waiting for me to take them. On the further downside, I think I broke out again from the stress. Not to mention my vision's been getting a little blurrier than normal and I sleep like a log everytime I hit the bed.
I won't have another completely work-free weekend for another.. 4 weeks. and even then, I just get one weekend before I have yet another fun work-filled weekend. And I mean filled.
I do love my job though, and the people I meet continue to inspire me- From the cousin of Sara Ruehling, a gorgeous 6-year old girl with Leukemia who is bravely fighting her disease while she waits for a match, to people who have never known the pains of a loved one with Leukemia or a life threatening blood disease, but still continue to fight so passionately for them. And then of course, you get the political stem-cell controversy kooks who are so proud of their involvement in getting prop 71 passed that want to do nothing more than to brag about how they were responsible for legalizing stem cell therapy research.
If one thing has come out of the three months I've been actively working as an Outreach Coordinator, it's a lifelong dedication to a cause. And although I've been lucky enough not to know someone or to have, myself, a life threatening disease, I still feel the desperate need to fight for those who have or may have them in the future. And now I have a clear-cut mission to accomplish when I move back to the Philippines - set up a Philippine National Bone Marrow Donor Registry. Because it's a shame we don't have one already when India has 3, China, several, and so many other countries too.
